2 Scuba Divers Die Off Coast of Monterey County, California

Two scuba divers are reported to have died off the coast of California's Monterey County.

California Fire Spokesman Daniel Berlant said emergency crews were sent to Point Lobos State Reserve around 2:45 p.m. in Monterey County. Lifeguards were performing CPR on one of the divers. They took the boat out to find the second diver floating just off shore.

"At that point, we got in a boat with State Parks lifeguards and located the second victim floating in the water about 50 feet from the rocks," said Capt. Carlos Aguilera of the Carmel Highlands Fire Department.

Officials said although CPR was performed on this diver, both were confirmed dead after they were taken to the hospital.

The victims were not released, but confirmed that one was a male and other female. The reserve where the divers died is a popular destination for divers and tourists, located four miles south of Carmel, or about 90 miles south of San Francisco.

"It's well known worldwide. There's lot of scuba divers that do launch from here. Even though this is a very beautiful place to be at, we want to be cautious. The tides, along with the weather patterns, can change and affect the tide pattern," said Aguilera.
