High School Hockey Fans Wear KKK Hoods to a Semi-Final Game In South Dakota

At a high school hockey game in South Dakota students supporting the Red River High school were wearing KKK hoods while at the game.

"I guess the Red River highschoolers are racists." That was the caption underneath the photo Shane Schuster tweeted when at a high school hockey game with some friends.

Schuster was sitting with friends watching the hockey game when he noticed the kids wearing the KKK hoods across the arena.  He took out his phone and shot a picture of the group in the white hoods.

"I thought, 'Are those KKK hoods?' I couldn't believe it," he said. "I was shocked," USA Today reports.

The principal of Red River high school says the matter is under investigation.

The Red River fans were participating in a long-standing tradition of wearing all white for their team during the play offs.

This tradition was actually started in the NHL and slowly trickled down into the college and high school levels.

The Red River fans were participating in their own tradition of wearing different colors to support their team during the three days they were in the play offs.

They wore black on day one. On day two, when the incident occurred, fans showed up in all white and on day three they were to wear all red.

The hockey game was between Red Rivers and Davies of Fargo High School. Davies head coach said he had seen the fans cheering for Red Rivers wearing all white but did not notice the students in the KKK hoods.

"That's pretty tacky," he said. "No, not in today's days, c'mon."

Davis Fargo High School is named after Federal Judge Ronald Davis who passed a ruling that integrated a high school in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Schuster said that by period two, the kids had removed the hoods. Officials at the game had been told about the KKK hoods. No word on whether or not that is why the kids removed the hoods.

Mark Rerick, Grand Forks Public Schools athletic director, emailed a statement to The Associated Press saying "After confirming the incident, we notified the administrators at Red River High School, who immediately began their investigation. To the best of my knowledge, the students have been identified by the Red River administrators, who are continuing their investigation."

After the photo was posted on Twitter angry followers left comments about how "despicable" they found the act. They also called for the kids to receive a strong punishment.
