Ben Affleck's 'Argo' Wins Oscar For Best Picture Amidst Groans: 2013 Oscar Win Prompts Critics, Twitter To Rave: 'Argo' Sucks!

Ben Affleck has won the 2013 Oscar for Best Picture for "Argo" Sunday night, yet not everyone felt the film deserved a place in the winner's circle.

Minutes after Affleck's "Argo" took home the 2013 Oscar, Twitter exploded with expletive-laden tweets about how terrible the film was.

"Personally, I thought Argo f*cking sucked," wrote Twitter user Rabb Hasan.

Jessica Stanley agreed.

"Argo sucked, just a Hollywood circle jerk with Ben Affleck morose in a fake beard," Stanley tweeted.

"But... But Argo sucked..." tweeted Jackie Braje.

But it wasn't just the Twitterverse that felt the Ben Affleck film did not deserve the Best Picture Oscar.

In an article for the Washington Post's blog entitled "'Argo Was A Good Movie. 'Lincoln' Was The Best Picture," film critic Richard Cohen explained why the selection of Affleck's film was flawed.

"All of life is like high school," Cohen wrote on Monday morning. "Certainly that's the case with Hollywood, where "Argo" won the Academy Award for Best Picture while the actual best picture, "Lincoln," did not. The relative merits of the two movies had nothing to do with it. The decision was made on the basis of popularity. The members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences apparently like Ben Affleck more than they do Steven Spielberg."

Yet critic Gene Seymour tells CNN the Oscar game was rigged from the beginning.

"Here's a flash for you people who think best picture really means best picture," Seymour wrote. "There are, and always have been, two criteria for a movie getting the Academy Awards' top prize and they have little, if anything, to do with whether it's really the year's best movie ... or even a very good movie. Either: 1. It's a movie whose success will somehow benefit as many people in the movie industry as possible. Or 2. It's a movie that somehow reflects Hollywood's best image of itself.

When both these factors are in play, the movie is unstoppable. So it should have been obvious from the beginning that "Argo" was going to nab that one."

"Argo" won three Oscars Sunday night. Chris Terrio won for Best Adapted Screenplay and William Goldenberg took home the 2013 Oscar in the film editing category. Affleck, who was snubbed for a Best Director nomination, showed considerable modesty in his acceptance speech for Best Picture.

"I never thought I would be back here, and I am," he said.
