Barbra Streisand Oscars 2013 Sings ‘The Way We Were’ To Honor Marvin Hamlisch; First Academy Awards Performance In 35 Years

Barbra Streisand performed 'The Way We Were' at the 2013 Oscars last night in memory of Marvin Hamlisch.

Marked her return to Oscars' stage since her first performance in 1977 performance of 'Evergreen' from A Star Is Born.

The performance began with a montage in memory of members of the movie-industry who passed away this year, ending with composer Marvin Hamlisch.

Barbra then entered the stage in a black and gold gown. The gown was custom made by Donna Karan, and was designed by Donna Karan herself.

She said, "Marvin Hamlisch was a composer of extraordinary depth and versatility. He was also a very kind and generous friend who could always make me laugh."

She continued, "Over the years, we shared many adventures together. Marvin left us way too soon, but I'll always have these wonderful, wonderful...memories," and she launched into the song 'The Way We Were'.

Streisand collaborated on the composition of the song with Marvin Hamlisch.

'The Way We Were' won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1974. It was originally written for the movie of the same name, starring Streisand and Robert Redford.

Streisand won her first Academy Award in 1969 for Best Actress in 'Funny Girl'. She also won Best Original Song for 'Evergreen', which was performed in 1976's 'A Star Is Born'.

Streisand hadn't performed at the Oscars since her first performance there 36 years ago with 'Evergreen'.

Oprah Winfrey tweeted of the striking rendition of 'The Way We Were', saying, "Barbra Streisand standing O for being classic elegance in every way. #Oscars."
