The Onion Apologizes For Tweet Against Quvenzhane Wallis

The Onion apologized for a tweet even the Onion found distasteful toward Quvenzhane Wallis.

The Onion is a news satire that pokes fun at a wide arrange of topics. During the Oscars last night, anything involved with the show was trending at some point or another. People tweeted and tweeted away throughout the broadcast, giving different opinions about different subject matters.

There was one tweet that circulated throughout the social web. It got so much attention because it was from an established media outlet. An employee for the Onion tweeted about the 9-year-old actress, Quvenzhané Wallis.

"Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a [@#$%] right?"

After starring in the "Beasts of the Southern Wild," and being nominated for best lead actress, the employee for The Onion fired away with the tweet that was a four-letter word that rhymes with bunt.

Wallis was shown in the crowd as the youngest nominee for Best Actress at the Academy Awards.

Steve Hannah, the CEO of The Onion apologized on behalf of the Onion to Wallis, via The Onion's Facebook page.

"Dear Readers,

"On behalf of The Onion, I offer my personal apology to Quvenzhané Wallis and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the tweet that was circulated last night during the Oscars. It was crude and offensive - not to mention inconsistent with The Onion's commitment to parody and satire, however biting.

"No person should be subjected to such a senseless, humorless comment masquerading as satire.

"The tweet was taken down within an hour of publication. We have instituted new and tighter Twitter procedures to ensure that this kind of mistake does not occur again.

"In addition, we are taking immediate steps to discipline those individuals responsible.

"Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry."

Even The Onion thought to apologize when they crossed the line in their eyes. This is coming from a media outlet that is a satire of the news.

Nothing has been publicized about any punishment for the person or persons behind the tweet. Quvenzhané Wallis has not commented on the tweet.
