Ailee's Brave Brothers Collaboration 'Johnny' Prompts Mixed Reactions On Reddit

If the 36,000 members of the K-pop "subreddit" (an online group on the interactive news site Reddit) are any indication of the broader Hallyu community, fans seem to have mixed feelings about the Ailee and Brave Brothers collaboration "Johnny," slated for release on Monday.

After a Koreaboo article revealing the collaboration between the two stars shot to the top of Reddit, some members of the most popular K-pop subreddit were quick to dismiss the whole thing as a bad idea.

"The issue is that Brave Brothers has the worst leveling, mastering, selection of instruments and harmonic balance," wrote Reddit contributor 5thEagle on Friday.

"Plus he can't resist advertising himself in his own songs. His songs sound too similar listening to different groups [he's produced in the past]. No way to build an identity if you're using Brave Brothers."

Redditor Yejiapsa doesn't mind the work of Brothers, famously responsible for K-pop hits for everyone from AOA to ZE:A, but just feels the producer has gotten to the point where he is repeating himself.

"I like him, but his releases are all very similar," Yejiapsa wrote on Thursday.

"When he finds a sound he likes, he sticks to it like glue. Hence [SISTAR's] 'Alone,' [AOA's] 'Miniskirt' and [AOA's] Short Hair are pretty much the same song. It gets really boring after awhile, honestly. I think he tried something a little different with [AOA's latest release from Monday] 'Heart Attack' though, so props for that."

Ailee fan Poryphria is holding her breath in hope that the Brave Brothers collaboration will be something different and on par with the singer's earlier recordings.

"Please be good," she wrote on Thursday. "If he distorts her voice, I'm done."

Fan Kiwinoms just hopes Ailee performs "Johnny" at her Seoul concert next month.

"It's #Johnny so she might be going for a vampire concept?" she asked.

"I can't wait. Also July 6 is the date of her first solo concert and there were reports that she would release her new song then. I hope [Ailee's label] YMC releases some teasers soon."

At least one Reddit user in the discussion, going by the name of Onimonkii inquired in a post on Thursday as to whether the name in the title was a reference to the CEO of allkpop parent company 6Theory Johnny Noh, who famously tweeted back in 2013 that it was the Korean entertainment news outlet's "job to report on everything, good or bad" after the site posted partially censored, unauthorized nude photos of Ailee. Ailee's ex-boyfriend and allkpop Vice President of Content Daniel Lee allegedly posted the photos.

"Johnny Noh diss track?" Onimonkii asked.

But the Reddit user is not the only Ailee fan that still remembers the Ailee allkpop fiasco. In a column published on allkpop on Thursday entitled "Ask Us Anything: Free-for-all," the five writers interviewed got a question they may not have been expecting.

"Did a writer from allkpop spread nudes of Ailee for revenge?" asked Blackcrystalcind.

The allkpop reporters did not respond to her question.
