Princeton Gives Away Houses for Free? But There's a Catch for New Owners

Princeton University is offering several large houses near its campuses for free.

However the new owners will have to physically move the homes to a new location. The houses currently located on Alexander Street in Princeton, New Jersey are on the land where the university is planning $300 million neighborhood development project.

The two-story houses that were formerly used as office space and other purposes now must be removed from the site or demolished.

These large houses can cost tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars to move even short distances. And would require significant amount of work before a family can occupy the space.

Martin Mbugua, a spokesperson for the university, indicated the structures have some issues, "mostly in the interior, due to remediation work in preparation for the project."

A dozen of these homes must be moved by the end of April for the construction to begin for the new project. If there are no serious takes then they will be demolished.

According to a university official the offer had attracted some interest, but no actual offers to move any of the houses off the University property.

University planners hope to complete Princeton's Art & Transit Project by 2017.
