Review: Ailee Shows Off Her Jazzy Side On 'Johnny' From Brave Brothers's 10th Anniversary Album

Though she maybe predominantly for her red hot R&B vocals, American-born K-pop singer Ailee taps into her cooler side on the jazz-inspired single, "Johnny," the latest installment of South Korean super producer Brave Brothers's "10th Anniversary Project."

Released on Tuesday, "Johnny" showcases the pitch-perfect voice of a 26-year-old solo artist at the top of her game.

Ailee possesses one of the largest vocal ranges in K-pop, with a nuanced delivery that makes for a wonderful listening experience. On "Johnny," the extent of her vibrato is limited, a starkly contrast from Ailee's 2014 hit "Don't Touch Me."

"Johnny" opens with a captivating mix of piano, saxophone and subdued vocals. From its onset, the song evokes the smoky dance halls of musical theater classics like "Chicago." Ailee is the chanteuse whose eclectic vocal chops can hold both male and female listeners transfixed.

The emotionally charged lyrics are reminiscent of phrases spoken by a film noir ingenue.

"Oh baby Johnny, why don't you know my heart?" croons Ailee in a plaintive voice.  "I'm the one hurting. Oh baby Johnny, I love you so much,"

This collaboration with Brave Brothers (real name, Kang Dong Chul), is one of the singer's best releases to date.

Brothers is highly regarded within Korean entertainment, having launched his career as a composer and producer for YG Entertainment, before founding his own agency, Brave Entertainment, in 2008.

The rapper-producer-songwriter has previously worked with chart-topping artists like 4Minute, SISTAR and Big Bang. As the latest addition to his ongoing anniversary project which previously featured Baechigi and Park Soojin, "Johnny" provides listeners who have not fully explored the musical catalog of Ailee or Brave Brothers with the motivation to check out both artists' work.

Vocally, the song is a standout release for 2015.

Its release also comes at the perfect time. "Johnny" is the perfect companion track to the recent single "Love Me Again," from male solo singer G.Soul. Perhaps Ailee would consider him for a future collaboration, somewhere down the road.
