Emma Stone Prefers Comedy Movies; Stone to Reunite With Steve Carell For ‘Battle Of The Sexes,’ Film About Billie Jean King And Bobby Riggs Famed Tennis Match

Emma Stone, the star of "Zombieland," says she prefers comedies. The actress will be reuniting with Steve Carell in "Battle of the Sexes." The film about the epic tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs will be produced by Danny Boyle for Fox Searchlight films.

The movie will be directed by "Little Miss Sunshine" filmmakers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. The screenplay was written by by Simon Beaufoy. Beaufoy has been working on the script for several years. Billie Jean King has been cooperating with the project. Bobby Riggs died in 1995.

"Battle of the Sexes" is the third project Hollywood is developing about King and Riggs but it is expected to be the first one in front of cameras.

Billie Jean King was 29 and the world's No 2 female tennis player when she was challenged by retired former Wimbledon champion Bobby Riggs, 55, in 1973. Riggs had been one of the world's best players in the 1940s. He challenged any top female player to a match. King accepted the challenge and won. King also won the $100,000 prize.

The game was played in Houston, with a $100,000 prize. King was carried into the Astrodome on a throne held by four muscled men stripped to the waist. Riggs was pulled in a rickshaw by models.

Emma Stone, who was praises for her work in the dramas "The Help" and "Gangster Squad," says she prefers comedies.

''Comedy is my true love. I doubt whether there will ever be another genre that can compete," she said in a recent interview with Look Magazine.

''A big part of my job is being able to understand different facets of the human psyche and I like to be able to push myself in roles where you have to dig deeper inside.''

''I probably gravitate towards those kinds of characters although it's not like I'm specifically looking to play strong women," she told Look. ''I'm attracted to roles where the female character has her own sense of identity and not just the guy's girlfriend and reacting to whatever he does."

''That's why playing Gwen in the 'Spider-Man' films has been so interesting and satisfying for me because she's such a forceful and independent young woman. I like the idea of playing women who can stand on their own and also be very loving and open.''

The 1973 match between King and Riggs became one of sport's most famous moments of the 20th century.

Emma Stone was recently been nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the Michael Keaton vehicle "Birdman." She will also be making her Broadway debut "Cabaret."

Emma Stone is also in talks to star in the musical "La La Land" from the director of  "Whiplash."

Stone started on TV and had a role in the 2007 film "Superbad." Stone has since appeared 2008's "The Rocker," was featured in the 2008 Anna Faris comedy "The House Bunny." In 2009, she appeared in "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" and "Zombieland." Stone had her first leading film role as Olive Penderghast in the 2010 teen comedy "Easy A."
