Dan Toler Dies: Allman Brothers Guitarist ‘Dangerous Dan’ Died of ALS, Lou Gehrig’s Disease

Allman Brothers guitarist Dan Toler dies of Lou Gehrig's disease at his home in Sarasota, Florida on Monday, Feb. 25, according to his manager Glen Halverson.

Dan Toler announced in 2011 that he had Amyotophic Lateral Sclerosis, a degenerative nerve disease better known as 'Lou Gehrig's disease' or 'ALS'.

Toler was in his 60's at the time of his death, and had played for the famous Allman Brothers Band in the late 1970's and 1980's.

Dan Toler and his brother, drummer David "Frankie" Toler, played in several groups together like Dickey Betts and Great Southern.

Dan Toler was in the Allman Brothers Band from 1979 to 1982, and was featured on albums "Enlightened Rogues," "Reach for the Sky," and "Brothers of the Road."

Chaz Trippy, friend and former bandmate, was quoted by the Sarasota Herald as saying, "His ability to make people laugh and feel good and happy was amazing. That smile of his is just a force of life and, God, how he loved playing that guitar."

Fans of Toler flooded his Facebook page with condolences and heartfelt messages, some saying, "RI.P. Dan you will be missed!" and "Dan's licks will never die and will amaze people for as long as humans are on planet earth!"

A memorial service announcement was made on the page too, saying, "CELEBRATION OF LIFE for Dan Toler will be held on March 9th, 1pm at Faith Presbyterian Church/Faith Sarasota..."

"The family is overwhelmed by the amount of love and support for Dangerous Dan Toler and family. God Bless you all!" the message concluded.

Halverson said that funeral events would be announced when confirmed.
