Girls' Generation Reignite Nostalgia And Pick Wonder Girls As Top Rivals

Girls' Generation is ready to bring back the nostalgia for their rookie days when they competed with Wonder Girls for the love of South Korea.

Girls' Generation, arguably the top girl group in South Korea today, spoke about their recent release "Party" when appearing on the KBS weekly show "Music Bank." During the interview segment, the group members discussed their goals for their most recent comeback in South Korea, and spoke about their rivalry with Wonder Girls.

"Grabbing the top spot for the whole summer is our main goal," said member Tiffany. "The strongest rival girl group that we have this summer is Wonder Girls. Although we have to compete with them, it will also make us remember the good times we had together."

Girls' Generation and Wonder Girls competed in the late 2000's, when songs like Wonder Girls' "Tell Me" and "Nobody" and Girls' Generation's "Gee" were hits that changed K-pop forever.

Both groups announced comebacks for the summer of 2015. Girls' Generation released the song "Party" on July 7, while Wonder Girls announced that it would make a return to the K-pop scene with a band concept later this summer.

Both girl groups' comebacks were highly anticipated and saw lineup changes from both groups.

"Party" is Girls' Generation's first official Korean release sans former member Jessica Jung following her departure from the group in 2014, and the second single after their song "Catch Me If You Can" was released in Japan.

Wonder Girls' new music is the group's first release in Korea since 2012's "Like This." Since then, Wonder Girls' Ahn Sohee left the group and leader Min Sunye got married. The comeback will feature a four-member lineup with the return of former member Lee Sunmi, and Wonder Girls will introduce a band concept despite previously promoting as a dance group.

The interview on "Music Bank" is one of the few times that Girls' Generation called out Wonder Girls for their rivalry, despite officially appearing as such throughout the years.
