Locusts Swarm Egypt: 30M Locusts Put Israel on High Alert & Panic Ahead of Passover [VIDEO]

Locusts swarm in Egypt over the past several days, just three weeks ahead of Passover.

The 30 million swarm of locusts descend in several districts of Cairo that forced residents to burn tires to create a black some to prevent the insects from staying in the city.

Earlier the swarms were said to have reached the Red Sea and also spotted in the Upper Egyptian city of Qena in three villages. Large swarm such as these could wipe out entire fields of crops in matter of days keeping the officials on alert. The large plague worked its way also in Sudan, Eritrea and Saudi Arabia.

Egyptian Agricultural Minister Salah Abdel Moamen stated that, "The current inspection teams at areas targeted by locusts did not witness swarms damaging a single inch of crop."

The locusts, he said, are "sexually immature and do not depend on plants for energy since they mainly rely on fat stores."

He added, "The locusts are merely storing fat on their bodies while they go on their spring migration outside of Egypt."

Moamen requested to the residents of Cairo not to burn tires or attempt to drive away the locusts themselves.

"Egyptian armed forces and border guards are attempting to fight the swarm with all means at their disposal," he said.

Israel's Agriculture Ministry set up an emergency hotline Monday urging residents to be vigilant in reporting locust sightings to prevent an outbreak.
