'Selma' Director Ava DuVernay Explains Why She Passed On Marvel's 'Black Panther'; 'I Have DIfferent Ideas'

Director Ava DuVernay reveals why she passed on Marvel's "Black Panther."

Back in May, Screen Rant reported Marvel has been courting the "Selma" helmer to direct the upcoming Phase 3 film. But earlier this month, DuVernay herself confirmed that she has passed on the offer, saying she will "declare my independece from this rumor."

"I'm not signing on to direct Black Panther," she revealed. "I think I'll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be. Marvel has a certain way of doing things and I think they're fantastic and a lot of people love what they do. I loved that they reached out to me."

During her closing speech at this year's BlogHer conference, DuVernay finally revealed why she passed on "Black Panther."

"At one point, the answer was yes, because I thought there was value in putting that kind of imagery and culture in a worldwide, huge way that they do in a certain way: flying, exciting action, fun, all those things, and yet still be focused on a black man as a hero - that would be pretty revolutionary," DuVernay explained. "These films go everywhere from Shanghai to Uganda, and nothing that I probably will make will reach that many people, so I found value in that. That's how the conversations continued, because that's what I was interested in. But everyone's interested in different things."

Other sources aren't ruling out that she may have declined due to creative differences, as with past directors who have found it hard working with Marvel Studios; Patty Jenkins exited "Thor: The Dark World" and Edgar Wright left "Ant-Man" right before it started filming.

Meanwhile, Black Panther is still set to debut in "Captain America: Civil War," launching May 6, 2016. The "Black Panther" solo film is slated for a July 6, 2018 release.
