Nicki Minaj-Taylor Swift Feud Revives Charges Of 'Bad Blood' Plagiarizing 2NE1's 'Come Back Home'

A Twitter battle between two of American pop's biggest stars is raising a lot of questions, and bringing K-pop into the mix.

On July 21, Taylor Swift became embroiled in a feud with Nicki Minaj on Twitter relating Minaj's music video for the song "Anaconda" being passed up for being nominated as "Video Of The Year" at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs). Minaj pointed to racism as the deciding factor behind her video being past up after breaking numerous records, and Swift responded to suggest that race didn't play a role but the lack of nomination slots.

Fans jumped in to defend Minaj, and one user reignited a conversation from May regarding the possibility that Taylor Swift's highly acclaimed music video for the song "Bad Blood" was copied from a Korean girl group.

"Can we talk about how Taylor's music video isn't original and was copied from a group of four WOC [women of color], 2NE1," wrote Twitter user Chaelinfenty.

Chaelinfenty also uploaded a picture comparing Swift's music video stills side by side with that of the 2014 music video for 2NE1's song "Come Back Home."

The tweet was shared nearly 5,000 times within 24 hours. Jezebel's The Muse picked up the issue, questioning how an allegedly plagiarized video was nominated for "Video of the Year" and seven other awards.

2NE1's "Come Back Home" was released in 2014 and was the fourth most viewed K-pop video on YouTube in 2014.

The similarities between the videos for "Come Back Home" and "Bad Blood" are striking, and the K-pop connection is being pinned on Joseph Kahn, a Korean-American who directed Swift's music video.

The controversy was previous raised shortly after "Bad Blood" was released.

In 2014, Kahn spoke to the Korea Times and discussed being aware of what sort of videos are being made around the world.

"I pay full attention to what's going on in my field, it's my job," Kahn said.

The Muse's Julianne Escobedo Shepherd wrote that she believed it was impossible for Kahn to have overlooked 2NE1's music video.

"It seems highly unlikely that any storied, thorough music video director would have missed a high-profile video from arguably K-pop's most celebrated girl groups," Shepherd said.
