K-Indie Spotlight: Watch Jee Young Sim Turn A Building Into A Musical Instrument With 19 Anyang Arts High School Students [VIDEO]

Unless you live a rare and exotic life, you've probably never seen 19 musicians play an architectural structure like a musical instrument, but that is exactly what happens on the Jee Young Sim live performance music video "Peak," released in May of last year, thanks to South Korea's Anyang Public Art Project.

"Peak," which features Jee along with students from the Anyang Arts High School playing an industrial tower like a gigantic drum and singing along in accompaniment, is a sound and a visual like no other.

To achieve the rare sound, Sim placed a microphone, PA and speakers within the structure.

At the start of the experimental performance, Sim sings a cover of Kim Jung Mi and Shin Jung Hyun's South Korean psychedelic classic "Wind."

Then the students play the tower as a drum and dance in it. It's really something.

Sim moved from South Korea to New York City at the age of 14. Once there, she studied art and took part in the thriving Brooklyn D.I.Y scene in bands such as Guita Deung Deung, Butterknife Krüsh, Taigaa, Chica Vas, and BovedaMore recently, her musical prowess has led her to work with members of the world renowned DFA records community under the name Jee Day.

All along, Sim has been satisfying her art addiction by combining sight specific music, performance art, and architecture to create things I, for one, have never seen before.

Her latest release simply titled "JEE," is a mind bending psychedelic electronic adventure. The beats are dense with weirdness and funky as heck. Sim is not afraid to skip all the catchy tonal clichés to create loops, often more in the noise realm than the musical, but never too harsh and always listenable. Some of this record could be classified as minimal techno, I suppose, but often it is a more tripped out version. I dig the dancey mellowness, so chill yet so deep. Sim gently hammers on waves of repetition to create new worlds.

Sim currently lives in the artist utopia of Berlin, Germany, where rents are cheap and artists can get lost in their work instead of the day-to-day grind of work and bills.

I'm anxiously awaiting whatever she has in store for us next.
