Angelina Jolie and Netflix will be coming together to direct a film based on Loung Ung's memoir entitled "First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers," the DailyMail reports.

Jolie has been making films that are about pain and suffering in her recent career as a director, and it seems that the actress will be continuing with the trend she started for her upcoming project. The actress is said to have signed a deal with Netflix to direct the Cambodian memoir "First They Killed My Father."

A report on Variety said that aside from directing, the "Maleficent" actress has been involved in writing the script for the film and she will also be producing it.

"I was deeply affected by Loung's book," Jolie said in an official statement that shereleased with regard to her new project, saying that the literary piece has helped her to understand the people in Cambodia, relating it to her adopted son Pax, who is a native of the country.

"It deepened forever my understanding of how children experience war and are affected by the emotional memory of it," Jolie further says about the book.

"First They Killed My Father" is a memoir written by Loung who is a Cambodian author and a human rights activits, according to Cinemablend. The book was first released back in 2000 and is set during Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge that took over Phnom Penh back in the 1970s.

The author is said to have been five years old during the war, enlisted as a child soldier after she lost her parents.

Reports say that Jolie was able to contact the Cambodian author around ten years ago, later becoming close friends. The screenplay for the film is said to be a joint collaboration between the actress and Luong.

Jolie began her career as  director back in 2011 with "In The Land of Blood and Honey" and last year, she released her World War II-themed film, "Unbroken."
