'Star Wars': Han Solo Origin Movie Announced For 2018; '22 Jump Street' Directors Will Helm Stand Alone Film

A "Star Wars" spin off centering on a young Han Solo has been announced for 2018.

"The story focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley," according to the official press release.

"22 Jump Street" directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have been tasked by Disney to helm the upcoming film.

"We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us," the Miller and Lord said in a statement.

Miller and Lord will be working with Lawrence Kasdan, a veteran writer who also co-wrote the screenplays for "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi."

"It's not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I'm excited to say we've found the perfect team to handle the task," said producer Katheleen Kennedy. "Larry [Lawrence] and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han's story."

The movie, which will release sometime in 2018, will focus on "how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley."

To date, no actor has been cast to play the young Han Solo.

"Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens" is directed by J.J. Abrams, and is set to release in theaters on December 18. "Star Wars: Rogue One," the series' first stand alone film is in early development with "Looper" director Rian Johnson. Lord & Miller's film is slated for a May 25, 2018 release.
