Hong Kong To Host Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) For 4th Year In A Row

The Mnet Asian Music Awards, also known as MAMA, will be held again in Hong Kong in 2015, the fourth consecutive time that the Chinese territory will host the awards ceremony and concert.

The Mnet Asian Music Awards started as the Mnet Km Music Festival in 1999 as an annual award ceremonies sponsored by South Korean conglomerate CJ E&M through its music channel Mnet.

Until 2008, the awards had been held in Seoul, South Korea.

But organizers rebranded it into Mnet Asian Music Awards in 2009, and began to host the awards outside of South Korea starting with Macau in 2010, Singapore in 2011 and then Hong Kong since 2012.

Korean online commenters expressed frustration that despite the majority of performers and awardees hailing from their country, the awards are continually held overseas.

"Stop acting like you're a global ceremony when you're clearly not and just keep it in Korea with Korean artists," "Why not in Korea," and "Do they want to be a hit? Mnet, do it in Korea for once!" said fans according to translated comments by Netizenbuzz.

Still, Mnet seems keen on attracting more Chinese and international fans to its awards ceremony based on its continued choice of Hong Kong as the event venue.

Last year, thousands of fans trooped to the AsiaWorld-Arena in Hong Kong to catch the awards and top groups perform. EXO won the Artist of the Year as well as Album of the Year for Overdose, while Big Bang's Taeyang nabbed the Song of the Year for "Eyes, Nose, Lips."
