Legendary K-Pop Group Shinhwa Delight Fans Old And New At KCON 2015 In Los Angeles

Celebrating their 17th anniversary this year, Shinhwa is South Korea's longest-running, first generation idol group.

Through label disputes, army enlistment, scandals, and solo promotions, Shinhwa has remained intact with all six original members still participating in active group promotions. Introduced as "the legends of K-pop" by MCs Danny from MNet show, Danny From L.A., and KCON special guest, Roy Kim, Shinhwa performed a show-stopping set for delighted fans, proving they deserved the love of their fan club, Chang Jo, and new fans.

As orange lightsticks lit up the crowd, their emotional introduction video played over the crowd. Voiceovers from the members delivered an "eternal promise" of "six members starting, six members forever continuing," as the music swelled operatically into the beginning of their 1999 track, "T.O.P." or "Twinkling of Paradise." (Note, the youngest performing guest at KCON 2015 in Los Angeles, Yeri of Red Velvet, was also born this year.) Sampling from Tchaikovsky's music for Swan Lake, "T.O.P." is already one of their most distinctive tracks, but the version performed at KCON was remixed with rock elements, transforming it into a darker, deeper piece.

Joined on stage by both female and male back dancers dressed in contrasting white, Shinhwa next performed their 2013 track, "This Love," which holds their personal record of eight music show wins. With a dance electro-pop feel and vogue dance moves, "This Love" is on the other side of the spectrum from their hip hop-tinged "T.O.P.", nicely showcasing their musical evolution through the years.

Hitting perhaps the only snag in their set, the members began an extended introduction and fan chat time, but none of it was subtitled on the concert screen, and they did not attempt much English. Still, the group showed their respect for their fans when, prompted by a suggestion from member Hyesung, they gifted all four sides of the stage with their signature greeting, "We are Shinhwa!" and hand pose before going into their most recent track, "Sniper."

Not to be deterred by the approaching end of the concert, Shinhwa kept the energy of the crowd up with their 2000 track, "Hey! Come On," featuring a dance solo by member Minwoo. Bookending their set with a reiteration of their eternal promise, Shinhwa closed down the night with a medley of their 2002 hit, "I Pray 4 U" and "Jam #1." To the refrains of "I hope to someday meet you once again, I pray 4 U..." and "I don't want to lose my step, pray for me..." Shinhwa assured both old and new Changjos of their return.
