K-Pop Double Take: Beenzino Generates Another Hip-Hop Gem On 'So What' [VIDEO]

K-Pop Double Take is a weekly review column highlighting recent releases that have yet to receive the attention we feel they deserve.

You would be hard-pressed to find another Korean hip-hop artist as consistent in delivering quality tracks as Beenzino.

Between his collaborations like Epik High's blazing 2014 hit "Born Hater" to his highly innovative work with longtime producer Peejay, Beenzino has to have the best batting average in terms of releasing material worth hearing of anyone in the South Korean hip-hop scene.

On his most recent solo single "So What," released on March 10, the rapper once again produces something special, bringing together a drum-centric main beat a la rap pioneers Gang Starr with an unexpected rhythm-less chorus that resembles the '80s pop prominently featured in hip-hop's formative years.

Though any Beenzino tune is tailor-made for the dance floor, once thing that makes his recorded output consistently so appealing is that the sound is more introspective than that of his contemporaries. And with a vibe in some way resembling Michael Jackson's 1982 hit "Human Nature" from his seminal album "Thriller," there is something both invigorating and somber on "So What."

Interestingly, as any jazz fan knows, the title (perhaps intentionally) is the same, as the opening track from another seminal album, Miles Davis's 1959 masterpiece "Kind Of Blue." Like Beenzino, Miles was an artist who seemed unconcerned with playing it safe or producing music in accordance with commercial trends. While both clearly absorbed a vast amount of the music taking place around them, they both favored substance over style and innovation over complacency.

Now, I'm not saying Beenzino is the next Miles Davis, but he sure could be the Miles of the Korean hip-hop scene.
