Thousands Flock To Seoul Summer K-Pop Festival In The Wake Of MERS Scare

It seems as though the MERS (Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome) scare that overtook South Korea back in May and June is no match for the "2015 Summer K-pop Festival."

Korea Herald reported that mover than 10,000, almost half of them being foreigners, attended the "Summer K-pop Festival" which took place on Tuesday, August 4. The show was headlined by world renowned K-pop acts like Infinite, T-ara, GOT7, and PSY. PSY especially brought heat with his performances of "Right Now" and his 2012 smash hit "Gangnam Style." The concert was held in part by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization to help increase travel and tourism to the country. When MERS broke out in June it slashed the number of visitors coming to South Korea by 60 percent.

The first case of MERS was reported in May. The disease claimed 36 lives since May and had a couple thousand in quarantine. It also took a toll on the entertainment industry as well. Performances at the Black Music Stage featuring Mad Clown, Junggigo, and Loco were cancelled. MBC's Music Core also took special precautions, requiring fans to wear masks if they chose to attend the broadcast.

As of Tuesday, South Korea announced a de factor end to the MERS outbreak but must wait to announce its official eradication until at least 28 days after the last patient tests negative for the disease.
