Members Of GOT7 And Mamamoo Injured During 'Star Idol Athletics Championships' As Competition Comes Under Fire

Multiple Korean pop stars received injuries during their participation in a competition under scrutiny for events resulting in multiple injuries in past years.

At least two K-pop idols were injured while competing in MBC's 2015 "Idol Star Athletics Championships," according to reports from Korean media outlets on August 8. Fan accounts also expressed concern of other idols receiving injuries during the competition.

Mamamoo's Moon Byul and Jackson and Jr. of GOT7 were injured.

Raymond Tuan, the father of GOT7 member Mark, took to Twitter to protest the injuries of his son's band mates Jr. and Jackson.

"Anybody else got injured?" Tuan asked on August 11. "They really should not ask any K-pop members to do this, they may end [their] career because [of] this."

Moonbyul took to social media to let Mamamoo's fans know that she was not seriously injured.

Jackson was injured previously while shooting a prior "Idol Star Athletic Championships."

The annual competition is a cause of continual concern for K-pop fans, due to the affect of injuries from "Idol Star Athletics Championships" on the idols' abilities to shows the complex dance routines typical in K-pop performances.

Along with the controversy over injuries, "Idol Star Athletic Championships" received criticism after SHINee's Minho didn't appear at the group's fanmeet in order to partake in a competition.

Appearing on MBC's "Idol Star Athletic Championships" helps promote idol groups, but is viewed as part of a package deal where K-pop groups may face consequences if they don't participate.

"Idol Star Athletics Championships" will air in September, during the Korean Thanksgiving holiday Chuseok.
