Billboard Praises Girls' Generation For 'Embracing Change' With New Single 'Lion Heart'

Girls' Generation seem to be taking a new direction musically and is embracing the changes that come with the departure of member Jessica, says Billboard K-pop critic Jeff Banjamin in his review of the girl group's new song "Lion Heart."

With the group losing one of their stronger singers, some members were stepping up vocally, the critic noted.

"What is new, musically, is the division of lines - namely when Yuri, a member who typically only chimes in with a line or two, gets to handle a majority of the second chorus," says Benjamin.

"It's a decision that further shows how Girls' Gen is embracing change in their eighth year together and that losing a member can lead to refreshing change.

Benjamin also acknowledged how the group was experimenting with fresh sounds for "Lion Heart," which he described as a "sugary piece of bubblegum pop."

"The tune sees the girl group embracing a more soulful approach to the music with funky basslines and brass added to the mix."

Girls' Generation released "Lion Heart" on August 18 along with five other songs as the first half of their new Lion Heart album, then dropped the remaining six songs on August 19, including the second title track "You Think."
