'One Piece' Anime Movie Confirmed For 2016 Release Date

This weekend marked the reveal of the "One Piece Episode of Sabo: Bond of Three Brothers" special. At the end of it however, fans were treated with a special announcement.

Perhaps one that no one had anticipated.

Slated for a release in 2016, a brand new "One Piece" anime movie was confirmed to be in the works. Unfortunately, little was revealed about the film. However, given the annual "One Piece" movies since 2000-2009 and the endless Fuji TV specials, the film will likely be plenty successful.

So far, fans are responding to the news with hopes that original creator Eichiro Oda will work on the film directly.

"I hope Oda will be involved. The best movies are the ones that Oda works on himself," said Videogamep in an ANN forum.

Funimation streamed the latest "One Piece - Episode of Sabo: Bond of Three Brothers" on Saturday as a simultaneous cast for the premiere in Japan. The special followed a past story of the three sworn brothers Luffy, Ace, and Sabo, when they all dreamed of becoming pirates.

For those who are unfamiliar with the series, "One Piece" is a popular manga and anime series created by Eiichiro Oda. My Anime List provides the following description of the story of "One Piece."

"Enter Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy that defies your standard definition of a pirate. Rather than the popular persona of a wicked, hardened, toothless pirate who ransacks villages for fun, Luffy's reason for being a pirate is one of pure wonder; the thought of an exciting adventure and meeting new and intriguing people, along with finding One Piece, are his reasons of becoming a pirate."

It goes on:

"Following in the footsteps of his childhood hero, Luffy and his crew travel across the Grand Line, experiencing crazy adventures, unveiling dark mysteries and battling strong enemies, all in order to reach 'One Piece'."
