Fantasy K-Pop Collab: 10cm + Jason Mraz

Jason Mraz has said on numerous occasions just how much he loves South Korea, so why haven't we seen a collaboration between him and some Korean musicians yet?

This week Fantasy K-Pop Collab will explore this question with what seems like an obvious solution, Jason Mraz needs to make music with 10cm.

Let's look at the following songs: "우정 그 씁쓸함에 대하여 (Friendship About That Bitterness)" from 10cm and "Geek in the Pink" by Jason Mraz.

"Friendship About That Bitterness" is a pleasant little ditty with a nice "Ooo ooo ooo" hook that one can't help but bob a head or tap a foot to. It is from 10cm's first studio album 1.0 and was released in February 2011.

"Geek in the Pink" comes from Mraz's 2006 album Mr. A-Z. It reached No. 71 on the South Korean singles chart. It is an extremely enjoyable tune that expresses his playfulness and ability to deliver quick lyrics. This video was filmed for TV at one of his many South Korean concerts.

The similarities are almost too many to count. Let's break it down.

First off, guitar and drum - a simple combination that allows the singers' voices to really shine. And what about those voices? Dynamic, controlled, variable and both Kwon Jung Yeol and Jason Mraz have a penchant for scatting. They amuse the audience with their tones, rhythm, and free-lancing vocals.

Then there are the lyrics themselves. Clever, poignant, and fun, 10cm and Mraz often times get a chuckle from listeners. The songs are always catchy and highly entertaining.

Performances are intimate, the musicians like to engage the audience as much as possible and encourage singing along and participation in the shows.

And those are just the obvious similarities shared by these two acts. Digging in a little further, it would be helpful to note how they got their starts in the music world. Mraz rose to popularity performing the cafe scene in San Diego. Kwon Jung Yeol and Yoon Cheol Jong began playing together as 10cm in Hongdae (a university area of Seoul) performing in the streets as well as coffee shops and small clubs. In the early days, both relied heavily on word of mouth to spread their tunes to the public.

Of course, it is also worth mentioning that 10cm fans are frequently delighted by covers of Jason Mraz songs.

Jason Mraz has real appreciation and admiration for his Korean fans. He kicked off his Tour is a Four Letter Word world tour in Busan, South Korea and followed it up a few days later as the headliner for the Rainbow Island Music & Camping Festival in Gyeonggi-do.

"I experienced so much love and support from my Korean fans, even from the earlier stages of my career, which makes me want to come back again and again," Mraz said in an interview with the Korea JoongAng Daily newspaper. "There is definitely something special about the Korean audience and as a performer, you can't ask for more than this kind of passionate fans."

So, Jason, why not give your Korean (and international) fans a new treat and collaborate with 10cm?

In case you are in need of further convincing, here is a video of 10cm performing "I'm Yours" in Hongdae.
