Royal Family Celebrates National Dog Day; TIME Fetes 1928 ‘Hero’ Dog

As the world commemorated National Dog Day, members of the British Royal Family also feted their favorite canines.

Known to be dog lovers, Queen Elizabeth has her corgis, while Prince William and Princess Kate have their cocker spaniel Lupo, reported People.

But it turns out that the royal who is most devoted to her dogs is Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

As the wife of Prince Charles is known for bringing her canines to royal engagements, she celebrated National Dog Day by honoring Bluebell, her Jack Russel rescue.

Clarence House in fact tweeted a picture of Bluebell, as Prince Charles and his wife where at the Birkhall house on the Balmoral Etate.

"Animal lover The Duchess of Cornwall gets a hug from her rescue dog Bluebell. Happy #NationalDogDay!," Clarence House's tweet said, as it posted a photo of a beaming Camilla holding Bluebell.

The dog is the younger of the two Jack Russsels. The Duchess adopted Beth from the Battersea Dogs and Cats home.

Camilla is an avid supporter of the pet sanctuary.

In June, the Prince and Duchess made an appearance at a dog show in Dumfries House, Scotland, which Charles helped to restore.

While Beth won an award during the show, Bluebell, on the other hand, simply enjoyed the public attention, as he dashed around.

Meanwhile, "TIME" magazine, in celebration of National Dog Day, looked back at the first "non-human" to grace its cover, a basset hound puppy who dog bred from champion parents.

The "TIME" cover story, which was prompted by the 1928 Westminster Kennel Club dog show, while highlighting the remarkable feats of hero dogs, also focused on the overall state of canines in America.

"It would be idle to suppose that the tiny fraction of the U. S. canine population which last week posed and strutted in Madison Square Garden was in any sense the most important," TIME said in its report.

"Other dogs did not pause last week, in the performance of their deeds and duties, to admire the antics of these prototypes," the magazine said in its National Dog Day special feature.
