Scarlett Johansson Speaks Up On 'Ghost In The Shell' Live Action Movie Petition To Recast

Since Scarlett Johansson was cast lead in "Ghost In The Shell" live action movie, critics have signed a petition demanding a recast of the role.

An excerpt of the signed petition has been published Jewish Business News.

"The original film is set in Japan, and the major cast members are Japanese. So why would the American remake star a white actress? The industry is already unfriendly to Asian actors without roles in major films being changed to exclude them. One recent survey found that in 2013, Asian characters made up only 4.4% of speaking roles in top-grossing Hollywood films."

The actress obviously isn't affected by the public backlash, and says that the movie is still "happening."

"It will be shooting the beginning of next year," the "Avengers: Age of Ultron" actress told Collider. "So I think we start production January or February and it's me and Rupert [Sanders]; and that's all I know."

"Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders will be helming the upcoming adaptation.

Creator Masamune Shirow originally published "Ghost In The Shell" as a manga comic in the pages of Japan's Young Magazine in 1989 before director Mamoru Oshii released it as an animated feature in 1995.

The success of the film led to a TV series, titled "Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex." It ran for another season, bearing the subtitle "Second Gig."

A sequel to the original movie called "Ghost In Shell: Innocence" released in 2004; its plot focused on the main character's sidekick

Another animated feature, called "Ghost In The Shell: Solid State Society," came out in 2006.

The franchise's latest installment is a prequel mini-series, titled "Ghost In The Shell: Arise."

Scarlett Johansson's "Ghost In The Shell" live action movie arrives in theaters on March 21, 2017.
