'Escape From New York' Remake To Star 'Sons Of Anarchy' Cast Charlie Hunnam In Lead Role

The latest rumor claims that "Pacific Rim" cast Charlie Hunnam is in the running to play Snake Plissken in Twentieth Century Fox's remake of "Escape From New York."

According to Starlog, "Sons of Anarchy" cast Charlie Hunnam is the latest contender to play the patch-eyed hero.

Their source also added that the "Escape From New York" remake might feature Snake leading a team of operatives.

"Plissken's team consists of Mina, a warzone journalist framed for murder and living in the shadows of New York as a scavenger; Cabbie, a schizophrenic travel guide who serves as comic relief," according to their report. "Gareth, the last surviving member of the President's security detail who harbors a dangerous secret; and The Brain, Plissken's former partner-in-crime who left him to die after a botched robbery."

Hollywood A-listers Jeremy Renner (The Bourne Supremacy, Avengers: Age of Ultron), Gerard Butler (Olympus Has Fallen, Law Abiding Citizen) and Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max: Fury Road) were previously rumored to play the movie's lead character.

An article from Time states that Studio Canal sold the rights to the franchise to Twentieth Century Fox a "very long and competitive bidding process." Other studios that previously attempted to develop an "Escape From New York" remake includes New Line and Silver Pictures - both projects never made it into production phase.  

The original "Escape From New York" took place in futuristic Manhattan, where the island is has been turned into a maximum security prison which houses the city's most dangerous criminals. The plot follows Snake Plissken, played by Kurt Russell, an ex-Special Forces operative-turned-convict which who has been summoned out of prison to rescue the president after the hijacked Air Force One crash lands inside the island's walls.

Russell reprised his character in Carpenter's 1996 follow-up "Escape From L.A."

Producers have yet to announce a release date for the "Escape From New York" remake.
