Eat Like a K-Pop Star: Have Black Tea Affogato With SECRET's Jun Hyosung

Welcome to this week's 'Eat Like a K-pop Star.' It's the weekly series where we showcase a delicious Korean specialty or something we've seen a K-pop star chowing down on lately and show you how to get or create some food of your own.

This week we couldn't stop drooling over an Instagram post from SECRET's Jun Hyosung. The idol gave as a spectacularly filmed video of the final touches of a smooth, sense-jolting affogato dessert. The simple Italian dessert is easy to make and even easier to enjoy.

The great thing about affogato is that it's refreshingly cool and tantalizingly hot, a nice shock to the senses that both cools and warms the body. It's perfect for a cleansing dessert after a heavy meal. Plus, affogato isn't too sickly sweet, so it doesn't give you a sugar high or stomachache following a rich lunch.

The best thing about affogato, though, is its simplicity. The sweet treat appears fancy but really only requires a handful of ingredients and a few minutes to whip together. It's perfect for serving to guests that you want to impress, or for jazzing up the normal "eat ice cream straight from the pint standing over the kitchen sink" routine.

We'll start with the basics. First, the ice cream. If you want to keep the Italian roots in this recipe, use a simple vanilla gelato like one from Talenti for this recipe. (Gelatos typically have less fat than heavier ice creams, too, so this could be a lighter dessert option.) If gelato isn't readily available near you, though, or if you prefer the taste of a more creamy custard, any classic vanilla ice cream will do just fine.

Scoop two small scoops of whatever ice cream you're using into your serving mug. Unlike your standard bowl of ice cream, it's better to use a mug or glass coffee cup for affogato, because it keeps the cool ice cream and hot tea or espresso held tightly together, marrying those temperatures and flavors instead of allowing the two separate liquids to spread throughout a big bowl.

Now you might want to top the ice cream. The zest or peel or a lemon or blood orange would be a tangy addition to a tea affogato. Other popular options might be some toasted almonds or a few crumbles of a pastry. Don't go overboard with the toppings - the key flavors in an affogato are still the ice cream and coffee or tea - but a little extra oomph never hurt anyone.

Lastly, the coffee, or, as Jun Hyosung enjoys it, black tea. Go with whichever hot beverage you prefer, but keep the alchemy the same. Make sure it's about three heaping tablespoons of espresso or your favorite type of tea, and make sure it's hot! It's a good idea to serve the ice cream in one mug and the hot beverage in a separate, smaller glass, so that you can pour it over the ice cream immediately before you dig into the dessert. This way you'll truly taste the dueling sensations and get the most out of the dish.

There you have it. A dish so easy a pop star can make it (or at least Instagram it.) Try this one today, you can't screw it up!
