K-Pop Boy Band Face-Off: iKON Vs. DAY6 [POLL]

It's not every day that two of the Big Three Companies (SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, and JYP Entertainment) release rookie groups at the same time. Earlier this month we were introduced to JYP Entertainment's newest boy band DAY6 and their instant hit "Congratulations." Then, on September 15 KST YG Entertainment released the first single of their long awaited boy group iKON. Although the two are fundamentally different in sound, structure, and pre-debut origin, we wanted to take the chance to pit the new rookies against each other.

iKON and DAY6 are two of the most versatile groups to debut this year. Prior to their debut, iKON was stated to have spent their time after the final episode of Mnet's reality-competition MIX&MATCH focused on their lyric writing and song composing. iKON member B.I took part in the lyrics and composing of the group's warm-up single "My Type," while member Bobby contributed his talents towards the lyrics as well.

Though many were expecting a more aggressive sound from iKON's debut, "My Type" was far from a disappointment. With its mellow tempo and smooth lyrics, "My Type" acts as the perfect warm up song for the group as it allows fans of all music genres an opportunity to be familiarized to the group. Not only was the song a gentle introduction to iKON but the boys' cute actions throughout the video made "My Type" all the more endearing.

Within a day of its release "My Type" earned a quick one million views and has since been climbing up in views. Additionally, it topped charts all across Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore, and many others.

While iKON gave fans a heartwarming love song, DAY6 aimed for the opposite. Their heart-wrenching and addictive breakup track "Congratulations" was written in part by all the members of DAY6. The group also contributed on the rest of the tracks on their mini-album. "Congratulations" hooks listeners at the first drum beat and keeps them listening with its dramatic instrumental and powerful vocals.

Unlike "My Type" which shows the iKON members singing and acting, DAY6's employs fellow label mates Choi Woo Shik and Jang Jee Ryung. With the two actors carrying out the music video's plot the members of DAY6 focus instead on their skills behind their instruments; save for the most dramatic moment in the video where member Young K inserts himself into the tense subway situation and shares the protagonist's emotions through his powerful rapping.

Like iKON, DAY6 managed to earn roughly one million views shortly after the video was released. However, due to unforeseen and unexplained circumstances the video was removed from YouTube and uploaded again later, resetting its view count. Even with the mishap, fans were quick to get "Congratulations" well over one million again though many can't help but wonder what their numbers would be at had the mishap not occurred.

DAY6 and iKON have distinctively different sounds from one another that fit them well within their respective companies, and definitely set them apart from the rest of the groups around them. Which debut did you prefer? Let us know below!
