LUNAFLY in Malaysia: Simple Yet Memorable

slide 2 of 6

If anything, LUNAFLY is as simple as they come but their showcase, with about 250 fans in attendance, proves that they are a band with many different colours and abilities. Starting their KL showcase straight away with Clear Day, Cloudy Day off their second single, they later introduced themselves and was greeted with enthusiastic cheers from their Malaysian fans. They continued singing Baby, made popular by Justin Bieber, with the fans singing along. Besides from wowing the fans with their vocals and musical abilities, they also won the fans by saying not only the normal Malay phrases such as 'terima kasih' (thank you) and 'apa khabar' (how are you) but also cute phrases such as 'comel' (cute), 'hebat' (awesome) and they also managed to add in the Malay slang '-lah' to make their speech sounds cuter and informal.

LUNAFLY also showed that besides from being able to perform as a group, they are able to hold themselves quite well in solo stages. Yun, the maknae, started off first with I'm Yours, a Jason Mraz original before Teo took over with Shontelle's Impossible, with Sam on electric guitar. Eventhough Teo normally did not sing as much as Yun and Sam usually did, he was able to carry off the song quite well. He mentioned before performing the song that he usually became very emotional singing this particular song and true enough, he really showed off that emotional side of him and the fans could not help but be awed by his performance. Sam, the leader, rounded up the solo performances with his own version of Rihanna's California King Bed.

LUNAFLY took a break for a while and interacted with the audience. Teo, the moodmaker of the group, acted like a language teacher and taught some Malay phrases to Sam and Yun. Although Sam was a bit skeptical with what Teo taught him, as he always taught the wrong Korean words, it was nevertheless really cute to see Teo trying to teach his two other groupmates and the fans were definitely entertained by their antics on the stage and kept cheering for them.

They continued the show with a special duet with one of Malaysia's very own YouTube artists, Enessa, performing Justin Bieber's As Long As You Love Me where their four voices blended quite well. Sam showed his gentleman side when he offered his seat to Enessa and stood up for the rest of the song. They also  performed several other cover songs such as Payphone, Just the Way You Are and also their debut single, Superhero. Yun said that it means a lot to him that fans were able to sing along to one of their songs. They ended the set with Cantik, an Indonesian song made popular by Kahitna, with Teo asking the fans to 'nyanyi sama-sama' (sing together).

LUNAFLY later came back on stage decked in quirky and cute red and pink outfits, performing One More Step, one of their original songs from their first single. They continued with This Love and Seeing You or Missing You. For the next song, Troublemaker, Sam asked the fans to get up instead of just sitting and that's when things get really crazy with fans singing along and dancing to the song. Yun and Sam then switched to electric guitars and gave the fans a taste of what their new songs off their first full album is going to be like. Special for fans in Malaysia, they performed the title track of their new album 'Fly to Love' and also 'Young and Innocent'. The fans are still high on energy even when the boys started to perform the last two songs of the night, Locked Out of Heaven and also 50 Ways to Say Goodbye. They waved goodbye and Sam said "I'll see you again!"

For the encore of the showcase, the boys turned up wearing t-shirts given to them by MyLUNAFLY, a Malaysian LUNAFLY fanbase, singing yet another Malay song called Bila Terasa Rindu. Fans were thrilled with their fluent pronunciation of the Malay words and was touched by their effort. They continued to rock the night with a medley of One Direction songs, such as One Thing, What Makes You Beautiful and Live While We're Young. Fans were going crazy, singing, jumping and dancing and before they knew it, it was the end of the showcase.

However, the night did not end just yet. The boys came back on stage for a mini Q & A session where fans were allowed to ask them questions. One of the fans asked whether Sam had tried teaching Yun and Teo some English phrases but Sam said they never remember things that he taught them. Fans were once again treated to the fun side of LUNAFLY as they bantered back and forth on what are the phrases that Sam had taught them. Also, it seems that kwiyeomi was really popular too as once again, they were asked to do the kwiyeomi. Just like during the fanmeeting the night before, Yun and Sam ran and hid because they did not want to do it again and insisted on Teo doing it. Their whole interaction here was really cute and cheeky as Teo insisted on teaching the kwiyeomi song to the other two boys once again and of course they had to do it since the fans insisted on it.

The showcase and Q & A session was three hours long but felt very short and definitely left the fans wanting more and more from them. It was a truly memorable night for LUNAFLY and their fans alike as the boys not only entertained them with a great selection of songs but also made the stages lively with their interaction.
