'It' Reboot Has Director Andy Muschietti On Board Who Will Play The Hellish Clown Pennywise?

New Line, the backing studio for Stephen King's "It" reboot is in negotations with "Mama" director Andy Muschietti to helm the film.

Cary Fukunaga, known for his work with HBO's "True Detective," was orignally attached to direct the "It" reboot, but left reportedly due to creative differences with the studio.

Screen Rant reveals that Fukunaga wanted to split the movie into two movies, but New Line was only interested in a single adaptation.

A report by THR stated that producers David Katzenberg, Seth Grahame-Smith, Dan Lin and Roy Lee are getting the "It" reboot back on track with Muschietti, the director behind 2013's suprise box office hit, "Mama."

Screen Rant's report claims that the director may be ideal for the adaptation, as King's "It" and "Mama" share "thematic ties in that they both deal with traumatized children and malevolent, mysterious supernatural creatures."

Muschietti made his directorial debut with "Mama," which earned $146 million against a reported $15 million budget, making it a box office hit. It starred Nikolaj Coster-Waldau of "Game of Thrones" and Jessica Chastain  of "A Most Violent Year."

Fukunaga cast "We're The Millers" and "The Maze Runner" star Will Poulter to play the hellish-clown Pennywise in the remake, although New Line saw it as a "Gamble." However, due to the recent developments, it is unclear if Poultier is still part of the project.

"The plot follows a group of friends from childhood to adulthood as they try to destroy a creepy, evil force that takes the form of whatever will frighten its prey most - usually a terrifying clown (naturally) called Pennywise," according to Digital Trends.

"It" is originally based on Stephen King's 1986 bestseller before it was adapted as a TV miniseries that aired in two 90-minute parts in 1990.

Producers have yet to announce a release date for Stephen King's "It" reboot.
