Sara Gilbert, left wing speaker on The Talk, has just announced her engagement to Linda Perry. The gay rights activist has not announced a date yet for their future wedding.

Sara Gilbert's partner Linda Perry, 47, is a highly sought after song writer, with celebrity clientele including Pink, Christina Aguilera, and Gwen Stefani.  She was once a member of the group Four Non Blondes who had the hit song "What's Up, What's Going On."

The former Rosanne star, 38, first talked about the proposal on her hit daytime talk show on Monday with co-hosts Julie Chen, Sharon Osbourne, Aisha Tyler, and Sheryl Underwood.

Rather than just pop the question casually over dinner, Perry arranged quite an elaborate picnic for the pair at an L.A. park.

After sitting in the park, while street musicians played her favorite tune, The Cure's "Love Song," Sara Gilbert said:

"[Perry] goes to her backpack and she pulls out some T-shirts, and the first T-shirt says 'Will,' and then she puts on another T-shirt that says 'You,' 'Marry,' 'Me' and the last one is a question mark. And then she goes to her backpack and gets a ring. So, I'm like, 'Yeah, after that spectacle!'" 

She adds: "So then she says, 'OK, turn around,' and I turn around and our mums are there and a couple of friends. ... So I think that's it and it's the most amazing proposal ever and then ... this guy walks up and she's like, 'This is John Waite,' and he starts playing Missing You."

Gilbert had once been married to TV producer Allison Adler, but split after 10 year.  The former couple share son Levi, 8 and daughter Sawyer, 5, and split in August 2011. Gilbert and Perry stepped out as a couple later that year.

The lesbian co-host of The Talk made headlines when she reluctantly came out of the closet in 2010. On this joyous occasion, Gilbert thanked all of her co-hosts for being so supportive of her regarding gay marriage.
