According to TVGuide.com, the official synopsis for the episode, titled "The Man Who Saved Central City," reads, "Season 2 begins with Barry deciding to protect Central City on his own. But when Atom Smasher attacks, Iris pleads with Barry to let his friends help protect the citizens. Meanwhile, Cisco helps Joe with his Meta Task Force."

Another synopsis from Futoncritic.com for tonight's "Flash" season 2 premiere reads, "BARRY DECIDES HE NEEDS TO PROTECT THE CITY ON HIS OWN - Picking up months after the Singularity attacked Central City, Barry (Grant Gustin) is still struggling to forgive himself for Eddie's death. Concerned about putting his friends in danger, Barry has pushed everyone away and has chosen to protect the city on his own. When a meta-human named Atom Smasher (guest star Adam Copeland) attacks the city, Iris (Candice Patton) tells Barry that he needs to let his friends help him protect the citizens of Central City. Meanwhile, Cisco (Carlos Valdes) helps Joe (Jesse L. Martin) with his Meta Task Force."

Entertainment Weekly asked executive producer Andrew Kreisberg what mindset Barry will be in the season 2 premiere after Eddie sacrificed himself in the season 1 finale.

"Being the hero is actually what the episode is about, and Barry not feeling like he was the hero of the finale. A lot of this episode is about coming to terms with having made a mistake, trusting Wells and traveling back in time," Kreisberg said.

"Then, even though he didn't save his mom, there were catastrophic consequences, and Barry's struggling with them in the premiere," he continued. "Like anybody who suffers a trauma, Barry has to learn to live with it. Joe says to him and one point in the show, 'Yeah, you made mistakes. The question is what are you going to do now?' Like for anybody, it's about processing the bad things that have happened and taking responsibility for your part in them, and then moving forward and making sure you do better."
