Stolen Laptop In Iran Shows New “Owners” On Tumblr Account, Goes Viral

A stolen laptop in Iran seems to be showing off its new “owners” and the robbed owner created a tumblr account for it that, for good or not, went viral.

Laptops are stolen at a rate of one every 53 seconds, based on a oft-quoted Gartner study, Mashable reports and one of those whose laptops have been stolen is Dom Deltorto's.

According to the tech site, Deltorto, a London-based animator had been robbed of his Macbook Pro. It was taken from his apartment last February 4. The animator installed the Hidden App, a $15 piece of Mac software that allows you to track a stolen machine the next time it connects to the Internet. The software will allow you to receive surreptitious pictures of its new owners from the built-in camera (in this case, an iSight camera), and will allow you to take screengrabs of what they’re doing on the desktop.

It took until late March for Deltorto to see his stolen Macbook show up online. The Hidden App did its job of showcasing the new owners, but the animator was surprised to discover that the laptop is all the way in Tehran. There was very little the police can do except inform Interpol of the incident. Iran is not the easiest place to recover a stolen gear from.

Taking things in his own hands in search of his Macbook, Deltoro started a Tumblr account called “Dom’s laptop is in Iran,” which he devoted to pictures of the laptop’s new owners. He found the new owners – the family playing Jenga, listening to music, and wearing what was likely unintentional headgear. The Tumblr went viral Thursday and as Mashable reported, it has since been password-protected.

There have been reports that a vast black market for laptops in Iran exists, because imports of computers and smartphones are banned due to international sanctions.

Deltoro is not the first person to use Tumblr devoted to Hidden App snaps with the intent of finding a stolen Macbook. Two years ago, Mashable reported about an Oakland designer named Joshua Kaufman who did something similar with a Tumblr called “This guy has my Macbook.”

The spy pictures snapped from the app helped Oakland police track the suspect and Kaufman recovered his laptop less than four months after it was stolen.
