According to TVGuide.com, the official synopsis for episode 3, titled "Mommy," reads, "Alex hits a breaking point when Scarlett brings up memories of Holden and Donovan becomes a target of the Countess's rival."

Futoncritic.com reports an additional synopsis, which reads, "Alex is pushed to her breaking point after Scarlett stirs up memories of Holden. Donovan is targeted by a dangerous rival of The Countess."

According to TV Guide, Lady Gaga plays The Countess, who due to an ancient blood virus craves the taste of human blood. But since The Countess isn't technically a vampire, she doesn't have any fangs. Instead, she uses a sharp-tipped glove to slit her victim's throats.

"Not since 'Murder House' has 'American Horror Story' felt so closely aligned to actual horror. The first half of the premiere plays out like a movie, as we follow two Swedish girls whose stay at the Cortez quickly goes from bad to worse to deadly. And while 'AHS' will always be loved for its campiness, it's fun to see this extravagance balanced with classic horror tropes," the article states.
