Failing to see beyond the surface and the core message underlying the satire, some have gotten it all wrong about Psy's "Gentleman."

With Psy's name up at the top of the world charts, competing standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Maron 5, Pink and Justin Timberlake, major media are  starting to view Psy not as a one-hit wonder but a true artist that garners much respect.

In the middle of such unprecedented back-to-back success, some are raising their voices about the violence and sexual sadism in his music video, "Gentleman."

The main concern can be summarized as follows: the promiscuous, violent behaviors seen in the music video are detrimental to our society's morality. Offended by the mistreatment of women in the video, naysayers are bringing 'objectification of women' into the conversation. Uh oh. Did they miss something that others did not?

The music video is clearly a satire of the present society's façade, pretenses and formalities. Most sensible viewers can see that the outrageous un-gentlemanlike behavior from the music video is hardly a guideline on 'how to treat a lady.'

In today's world where so much is said by so many under so many different nicknames online, we have to be able to discern ignorant, malicious opinions from critical reviews.

Psy has repeatedly told the press that he writes his music for the public. He wishes to sing about what matters to the people, whether it be friendship, love for one's country, battle against injustice. He has sung about such topics in his previous albums. Be careful, however, as there are some sexual contents that may raise a few eyebrows.

For Psy, humor and satire have been at the forefront of discussing such deep, sometimes-touchy subjects. He strives for catharsis through his music. The power to make people laugh at the end of the day, that is what Psy has. To be able to laugh at oneself may be a good starting point in maturing into a gentleman and a lady.
