"We are getting to know each other."

That is what every one of the celebrities stated, either themselves or via spokespersons from their management company, in response to the wake of the news about their secret romance. Kim Tae Hee and Rain, Lee Jang Woo and Oh Yeon Suh, Tony An and Hyeri, the list goes on.

If there is a textbook on 'how to respond to romantic scandals when you are a celebrity', the said line would start the opening paragraph as the gold standard, the essence of what to say in such situations.

The line itself is quite enigmatic. For some couples, it is used to mean as a confirmation to the news. For others, it is a negation that they are only getting know each other-as friends. Its ambivalence yields a variety of usage, so it is perfect when one wants to say something without telling anything.

Understandably, being that celebrities live off of their image, the revelation of personal romance can damage their perception which can lead to issues in getting endorsement deals. Especially for young idol groups who are supposed to be objects of adoration by their fans, their personal romance destroys the virtual romance that they share with their fans.

Of course, the celebrities may sometimes be truly in the stage when they are trying to learn more about each other and see if they are right for the other person. But being public figures, their interests are often made known to the world, destroying what may have been a good chemistry in the works.

There are good arguments for both camps regarding the protection of privacy for public figures whose job hinges on showing and displaying their talents to the public. One camp sides with the right of privacy for public figures, while the other camp claims that a certain extent of celebrities' private lives are a fair share for the public. The tension will remain as long as there are celebrities, who want to show as little of their privacy, and viewers, who want to see as much as possible, living in our world.
