Newborn Left Abandoned On Hawaiian Beach

A newborn baby girl was found abandoned and left on a beach in Honolulu, Hawaii on Sunday night.

The newborn girl is described in various reports as full term and weighing 8-pounds. According to an official from the Department of Human Services, the baby was "abandoned immediately after birth."

The newborn was left on at Sandy Beach in east Honolulu. A Good Samaritan found the abandoned child and brought the newborn to a hospital.

The woman that found the newborn left on the beach was parked there sometime between 11pm and midnight. Reports say the woman heard people screaming, then silence, then a baby crying.

The Good Samaritan followed the sounds of the baby crying and found the newborn girl left naked on the beach. The woman came to the child's rescue. Reports say the newborn is drinking formula and doing well at Queen's Medical Center.

"We are just very grateful this child is alive and doing well," said the official from the Department of Human Services, according to the Huffington Post.

The official also said that if no one comes forward to claim the newborn, the Department of Human Services will file a petition with family court in order to gain custody. The child will then become a ward of the state until a family can be found for her.

Huffington Post reports, "In 2007, Hawaii became the 48th state with a baby safe haven law, said state Rep. John Mizuno. The law provides immunity from prosecution for leaving an unharmed newborn within 72 hours of birth at a fire department, police station or hospital or with emergency services."

Reports say the police have opened an investigation and if charges are ever filed, they will include endangering the welfare of a minor and child abandonment.
