Fantasy K-Pop Collab: TOP + Nicki Minaj

In the world of K-Pop, Big Bang is perhaps one of the most recognizable acts. The five member group is known for their unparalleled songs, high-energy live performances, and ability to change styles - from hip-hop to dance pop to R&B.

But there is always one factor that remains constant in the group's songs - the low bass rapping of TOP.

As the oldest member of Big Bang, and the lead rapper of the group, TOP stands out for his unique rapping style. He is also known throughout South Korea and the rest of Asia as a fashion icon and an accomplished actor.

Trinidadian-born American singer-rapper Nicki Minaj, too, is noteworthy for her own brand of rapping in addition to her status as a fashion icon.

While the two artists have fairly different sounds, they are complimentary as they draw on the same musical elements to create lyrical fluidity and interesting arrangements.

Before breaking down those elements, we will use two songs as the basis for comparison: TOP's solo song "Turn It Up" and "Va Va Voom" from Nicki Minaj.

"Turn It Up" was featured as a bonus track on TOP's collaborative album with fellow Big Bang rapper G-Dragon, GD & TOP. GD & TOP was the fifth best-selling South Korean album of the year and produced three successful singles, "High High," "Oh Yeah" and "Knockout." The album also included three solo tracks by TOP.

G-Dragon and TOP co-wrote most of the lyrics and succeeded in creating their own style of hip-pop by mixing a variety of genres together on the album.

The lyrics to "Turn it Up" are about how cool and posh TOP is. At one point he compares himself to a whole verse of famous designer brands.

The rap also incited a scandal when it was suggested TOP was calling out another Korean rapper, MC Mong, for skipping out on his mandatory military service. However, TOP's agency, YG Entertainment, very publicly denied the accusations.

"Va Va Voom" is Nicki Minaj's fifth single from her Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded album. It was initially meant to be the album's title track, but was postponed in favor of "Starships."

"Va Va Voom" is an electro-pop dance song with a notable dubstep influence. It is a highly sexualized song with lyrics that talk of seduction and sexual activity with a man.

The single reached number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 and received positive reviews from critics.

Minaj was also involved in a tiff with veteran American rapper, Lil' Kim. "Stupid Hoe," another track on the Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded album, is said to be a response to the feud.

Both TOP and Nicki Minaj incorporate their animated raps into a context of pop and electronic music styles. They are not afraid to mix genres and travel off the beaten path to create songs and music videos that start conversations with their beats, themes, and lyrics.

Another noted similarity between the two stars is their wild fashion sense and varied personalities.

Nicki Minaj is well-known for her colorful costumes and wigs and also for taking on alter-egos in her performances and videos. TOP, too, is often seen in costume-like stage and video attire and appears to fans as having two very distinct sides to his personality. On the one hand TOP is quiet, cool, and collected, but at the same time he is quirky and endearing.

A TOP/Nicki Minaj collaboration would definitely be an attack on one's ears and eyes, but in the best way possible.

The song itself would incorporate elements of dubstep and reggae to create an original dance beat over which the two artists could lay a smooth rap flow.

Because of the sharp contrast in their vocal ranges, it would be interesting to hear them balance their verses out by switching back and forth in a sort of rhyme battle delivered as a fluid, even rap.

The content of the lyrics honestly probably would not matter in the slightest. Provocative sexualized lyrics would be just as welcomed as nonsensical fantasy rhymes, and neither would surprise fans at all.

The highlight of a TOP-Minaj collaboration would undoubtedly be the music video. It would blend wacky costumes and bizarre imagery, but against a simple backdrop - a similar style to the "Turn It Up" video, but with infinitely more color an pizazz.

TOP and Nicki Minaj both include the same elements in their music, yet are quite different from one another in terms of style. If they were to collaborate, TOP and Minaj would effortlessly compliment one another, mixing sexy and surreal in a groovy electro-hip-hop track that would likely please fans of both.
