Space Mountain Ride At Disneyland Reopens After Three-Week Closure For Safety Work

Space Mountain, one of Disneyland's most popular and iconic rides, has reopened. After a three-week closure to complete safety work, Space Mountain in Anaheim, California was open to the public again on Friday evening.

Disneyland closed the 36-year-old ride on April 13th. State regulators investigated the injury of a contract worker who suffered from broken bones after he fell off the ride's slanted roof while cleaning. Regulators found violations related to safety procedures and equipment for maintenance staff. A month earlier, another employee was critically injured when he was hit by a speeding vehicle during ride tests.

The contract company was fined almost $61,000 for the violations. Disney did not appeal by Friday's deadline but said it continues to meet with the state agency about the citations, according to the Associated Press.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health also issued fines, totaling $234,850. They found six violations related to the maintenance of fire extinguishers and safety barriers, and equipment for cleaners and workers on Space Mountain.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the state agency has not decided if follow-up inspections are needed since Disney's decision to close the attraction, according to a spokesman for the Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

Meanwhile, Disney closed two other rides, the Matterhorn Bobsleds and Soarin' Over California, to review the safety of employees who maintain them and safety protocol. Both have since reopened.
