That could also mean that "The Vampire Diaries" will end if Elena Gilbert returns to the show. Co-creator Julie Plec revealed that there was a chance Nina Dobrev will make an appearance on TVD.

"There is still a chapter of [Elena's] story left to be told," Plec told Wetpaint. "[So we'll] take [Nina] for whatever she's willing to do to tell that story."

"I would say that, if The CW called today and was like, 'By the way, Season 7 is the last season,' then I think we would scramble to make sure she [Nina Dobrev] was in the finale. But as of right now, we're acting like the show will go on, so no," executive producer Caroline Dries told the Inquisitr.

"Nina has always said that if there's something for her to do in the series finale that she will be there to do it," Plec told Entertainment Weekly May 2015. "When she left, she said, 'I want to see this character to its end at the end of the show, so I can't wait to come back and put her to bed again.'"

Ian Somerhalder agrees with Dobrev about working together on "The Vampire Diaries," the show that brought them together. Somerhalder even reportedly threatened to quit TVD if Nina's character came back from the dead.

Somerhalder said he's been enjoying the freedom TVD's plots now have with Nina Dobrev's departure.

"They [Damon and Elena] were great characters separate, they were great characters together, and they remain great characters separated," Somerhalder recently said in an interview with E! News.

Ratings for "The Vampire Diaries" Season 7 dropped since Damon and Elena were separated by the long sleep. Fans have been waiting for Nina Dobrev to make a comeback.

Since the breakup with Stowell, Dobrev has been spotted flirting with her best friend, Chace Crawford.
