The Leno gas station prank is a fake newscast where Chuck Rafferty pretends to report the news above an unsuspecting person at the gas pump.
Recently, Will Sims was the unsuspecting victim of the Leno gas station prank. Rafferty starts addressing Will from the television set above the gas pump, while Will is singing to himself. Once Rafferty gets Will’s attention, Rafferty offers to pay for his gas if he performs a song.
Sims says he’s “an 80’s kid,” and elects to sing Bon Jovi’s hit “Livin’ On a Prayer.” Rafferty then asks if he needs the words to the song, and Sims confidently responds with a smile on his face,
“No, I know ‘em baby!”
Does he ever! He belts out the Bon Jovi hit a cappella, showcasing a beautiful voice and enough bombast to make Rafferty and the entire Leno audience fall in love with him. The other customers at the gas station start to wonder what’s going on, too.
Sims doesn’t care at all, loving the opportunity to sing Bon Jovi for free gas, even though, by this time a crowd has gathered to gawk at the Leno gas station prank come to life.
Once the faux-anchor, Rafferty, informs him he's "livin' on a free tank of gas," Sims starts singing "livin' on a free tank of gas," even louder than his earlier rendition.
Meanwhile, Sims’ wife, Monifa, is in the front seat of their car laughing hysterically at her husband's antics. Rafferty notices Monifa’s amusement and asks Sims if she’d like to join him singing. At first Will Sims says “nah,” but eventually Monifa joins him in front of the pump of gas.
Monifa elects to belt out another 80’s hit, the Eurythmic’s “Sweet Dreams,” while Rafferty, the Leno audience and the people at the gas station look on in wonder. The Leno gas station prank simply melts your heart as the couple embrace their inner musical stylings during he impromptu karaoke at the gas station pump. It was no longer the Jay Leno gas station prank, but the Will and Monifa show.
The Leno gas station prank usually can turn tiresome as Rafferty’s face startles pedestrians, but this time the Leno gas station prank was incredible as Will an Monifa Sims showed us all how to get down at the gas station.
The Leno gas station prank then went viral making minor stars of Will and Monifa Sims, so Leno brought them to Burbank, and had them perform with the Tonight Show Band.
