Nude Painting of Actress Bea Arthur Sells for 1.9 million; Less Than Orginally Expected

A nude painting of Bea Arthur sold for 1.9 million dollars this week to an anonymous buyer.

At a New York auction this Wednesday night, a painting of Bea Arthur topless was sold for a price lower than originally than expected. The painted was expected to receive around 2.5 million dollars in the post-war and contemporary art sale.

Aptly named "Bea Arthur Naked," this painting was created by artist John Currin, back in 1991. Arthur never modeled naked for Currin; the painting was created by a photo of Bea Arthur clothed.

The proud new owner has yet to be announced and is still anonymous.

Bea Arthur is widely known for her portrayal of Dorothy Zbornak, a divorced substitute teacher, on the hit comedy "The Golden Girls."

Arthur left "The Golden Girls" after seven years. Arthur also played a popular recurring character in "All in The Family." In "All in The Family" Arthur played

Maude Findlay, Edith Bunker's cousin, an outspoken liberal feminist.
Arthur's portrayal of Maude would also earn Bea Arthur a place in the history of the women's liberation movement.

In interview referenced on the Christie's site, according to Today, Arthur speculated about the portrait. "Maybe [Currin] was attracted to the feminist movement of the 1970s. Because of 'Maude,' I was the Joan of Arc of feminism. He certainly couldn't have done anything with Marlo Thomas of 'That Girl.'"

However, in the same notes on Christie's website Currin says he always considered Arthur "more of a maternal figure than a feminist icon. I watched
'Maude' all the time when I was a kid. She's a genius. She's funny because she's so much smarter than everyone around her."

Bea Arthur died of cancer in 2009 at age 86, leaving many hearts saddened by the loss of such an amazing woman. Arthur also left $300,000 to The Ali Forney Center, a New York City organization that provides housing for homeless LGBT youths.
