Wolf Blitzer to Atheist Tornado Survivor: Did You 'Thank The Lord' (Video)

Wolf Blitzer asked an atheist if she thanked the lord for helping her survive the massive and destructive tornado that hit Moore, Okla. The awkward CNN correspondent had another awkward moment as the two laughed off another instance of Wolf Blitzer’s ongoing on-camera missteps. Wolf Blitzer’s atheist survivor found the first thing to laugh about after the frightening encounter. There may be no atheists in foxholes, but there are atheists in tornadoes.

Rebecca Vitsmun grabbed her 19-month son and escaped from their house a mere seconds before the devastating tornado ripped through it. When Wolf Blitzer found the survivor and turned on the microphone he commented "We're happy you're here. You guys did a great job. "You've gotta thank the Lord, right? Do you thank the Lord for that split-second decision?"

The brave mother, Vitsmun, hesitated momentarily and finally smiled and replied, "I -- I'm actually an atheist."

Not one to be put off by awkward live moments, Blitzer said "You are. All right. But you made the right call.”

Leaving the atheist survivor to explain to the intrepid CNN interviewer "We are here, and I don't blame anyone for thanking the Lord."

Even though Vitsum was able to laugh off the situation graciously, it should be noted that not everone in America calls on God for their own survival. America has been experiencing a marked drop in religious belief over the past decade. A WIN-Gallup poll published last year found that there was a 13 percent drop in religiosity in the United States between 2005 and 2012.
