While walking to board Marine One to head to Annapolis, Maryland, President Barack Obama forgot to salute to a Marine officer who was standing at the bottom of the helicopter.

When the Marine officer made his salute to the President, Obama seemed to have overlooked his gesture and failed to return his salute while boarding the helicopter.

Upon realizing that he has made such an embarrassing mistake, Obama jogged back down the stairs from the helicopter and spoke briefly with the Marine officer.

While the content of the conversation between Obama and the Marine officer is unknown, it appears that Obama was apologizing for his awkward mistake.

As the brief talk between Obama and the Marine officer came to a close, the Marine officer showed a slight smile afterwards.

After the conversation, Obama simply went back up the stairs and did not try to make up his mistake by saluting again. He simply shook the Marine officer's hand while conversing.

According to ABC News, whenever Obama boards Marine One, he almost always makes a salute to Marine officers.

Obama's embarrassing and awkward mistake on Friday was a rare one.

After the incident, several individuals on Twitter wrote negative comments regarding the President's mistake. @SimonMaloy said, "JUST RESIGN ALREADY AND LET AMERICA HEAL," and @anamariecox shared, "'Forget' OR SECRETLY MUSLIM?"

Obama was heading to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in order to deliver a speech at the graduation ceremony. He boarded the helicopter at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, a day with grey skies and drizzling rain.
