Jack Vance Dies: Award Winning Author Died at 96

Jack Vance dies Sunday evening, in his house at Oakland, California.

The author of mystery, science fiction and fantasy book, Jack Vance dies at the age of 96. During his last years, the author suffered from diabetes and poor kidney, which was only maintained through control of his diet. John Vance II told The Associated Press that his father, Jack Vance dies Sunday in their home in Oakland.

In his later years, Vance suffered from poor kidney health and diabetes, which he which he maintained by diet control, his son said. John Vance II, describing his father, shared, "This is a complex guy, and (there's) an awful lot to say about him... Author, friend, father and grandfather, there will never be another like Jack Vance."

John Holbrook, or most commonly known with his penname as Jack Vance were able to publish more than 60 books. But he also used John Holbrook Vance for 11 mystery books he had written. Furthermore, Vance have wrote three stories using Ellery Queen. Some other pen names he used were Peter Held, Jay Kayanse, Alan Wade and John Van See. Jack Vance has his own website, maintained by friends and family.

Through his years as a writer, the author was able to collect several awards such as Hugo Awards for his 1963 book, "The Dragon Masters" as well as his 1967 literary masterpiece, 'The Last Castle'. He also garnered an award for his memoir titled 'This is Me, Jack Vance' three years ago.

Jack Vance was born in San Francisco and he graduated college in University of California, Berkeley. Vance worked as a surveyor, carpenter and a seaman until his first book was published in 1945. But he was only able to establish himself as an author during the 70s.

'Lurulu' was John Vance's latest novel as he had said that it will be his final book.
