Photographer Anthony Ellis took a picture of what may be a UFO flying over the North Shore Mountains in Vancouver, British Columbia, adding to the astonishing 2,000 sightings in Canada from last year alone.

According to the Vancouver Sun, Ellis noticed the spec of light on the photo on his computer later, emphasizing that he did nothing to alter the image.

"I was quite surprised," he admitted.

Still, Canada has seen its fair share of UFOs in recent year. According to Manitoba-based UFOlogy, 1,981 sightings were reported in 2012 as compared to 1,004 in 2008.

Vancouver also happens to be one of the five Canadian cities to report the most number of UFO sightings, reported The Huffington Post. The other four are Winnipeg, Calgary, Toronto, and Kelowna.

"It's something across the board," said civilian science writer Chris Rutkowski.

"People in Canada are actually looking up into the sky more than in previous years."

Last week, a UFO was spotted at the Edgemoor Barn in California, showing the international prevalance of the phenomenon.

Adam Canning, 10, of Lake Charlotte, is one of the many Canadians who saw a UFO this year.

"I could see it in the distance for about a minute and then like boom, it went really fast," he said to CBC News.

"I heard this, beep, beep, beep. I knew something was in the sky. I looked up and there was a big thing. Big, round, like a big hotel or something. I looked at my buddy and I'm like, 'That has to be a UFO.' There's normally helicopters flying over our house but that was way bigger than a helicopter, so I knew it wasn't a helicopter."

UFO sightings which go unexplained, like Canning's experience, are rare.

"Only about 7.5 per cent of the cases last year ended up being unexplained. Oddly enough, only about 15 per cent were completely explained, so it's really a matter of intense investigation," said Rutkowski regarding the survey.

"There's a lot of work that needs to be done before we can put reports like this into bed."
