Cheerios Commercial Featuring Interracial Family Receives Racist Youtube Comments Although U.S. Mixed Race Marriages At All-Time High

A Cheerios commercial featuring an interracial family generated racist comments on Youtube, despite the most recent U.S. Census data revealing that mixed marriage are at an all-time high.

The commercial attracted enough negative attention that the Youtube comments section was disabled. As of Friday afternoon, the video had almost 300,000 views, with 4,500 likes and 705 dislikes.

The commercial features a biracial young girl having a conversation with her Caucasian mother about whether or not Cheerios cereal is really a heart-healthy food. The video then shows the girl's African-American father waking up from a nap on the couch, with his chest covered in Cheerios.

According to Yahoo! Shine, some users on Youtube called the 31-second ad "sinister," "an abomination," and an example of "racial genocide." They said the video made them "want to vomit."

Some Reddit users also expressed outrage over the commercial, calling it "disgusting propaganda" and the people in it "race traitors."

"Shoving multi-culturism down our throats when we know it fails.. awesome," user chechnyatx said.

However, these users' comments come in a time when, according to the most recent U.S. Census data, interracial marriages have reached an all-time high. One in 12 marriages are between people of different racial backgrounds, and almost 50 percent of children in the U.S. are multiracial.

Many took to Facebook to express their appreciation for Cheerios' commercial, praising their depiction of a mixed family, The Huffington Post reports.

"Having been mixed in the '70s, I'd like to thank everyone at Cheerios for making a commercial with an interracial couple! Going to buy boxes today! Many thanks for reflecting what my family looked like," Beschelle Lockhart posted.

"Just watched your commercial with the biracial family. Beautiful. Thank you so much," Alexandra Burt commented.

Cheerios stands by their decision to feature the interracial family in their commercial, despite the racist backlash on the Internet.

Cheerios vice president of marketing, Camille Gibson, told Gawker: "Consumers have responded positively to our new Cheerios ad. At Cheerios, we know there are many kinds of families and we celebrate them all."
