Mookie Blaylock Upgraded to Serious Condition; May Be Charged in Fatal Car Crash; Pearl Jam Sends Best Wishes

Mookie Blaylock’s crash landed him on life-support, but his condition has been upgraded to serious condition. Former NBA All-Star Mookie Blaylock may be facing charges in the crash that killed a passenger in another car near Atlanta.

Mookie Blaylock’s car crash could bring vehicular homicide charges in the death of Monica Murphy. The Cadillac Escalade SUV Blaylock was driving crashed on Tara Boulevard, a busy four-lane highway 17 miles south of Atlanta in Clayton County on Friday afternoon. Blaylock was airlifted to the Atlanta Medical Center. He got surgery for a broken ankle on Saturday morning. Atlanta Medical Center spokeswoman Nicole Gustin confirmed that Blaylock’s condition had improved since he was airlifted to the hospital.

Jonesboro police chief Franklin Allen said he will be talking with the district attorney on whether they will bring charges against Blaylock. Blaylock lost control of his SUV, crossed the center median and collided head-on with the vehicle driven by Murphy's husband, Frankie. Allen said he believed Monica Murphy died from internal bleeding. Her husband suffered a broken ankle. Blaylock may be charged with driving on a suspended license and failure to maintain control of the vehicle.

Allen also said there was an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a DUI and drug charge in Spalding County, Ga. There were no indications that Blaylock was speeding or if alcohol had a factor in the accident. Allen noted that Blaylock had previously been under a doctor's care for seizures.

Mookie Blaylock was one of the best defensive-minded guards. He played NBA 13 seasons in NBA, seven with Atlanta Hawks 1992 to 1999. Blaylock also played for the New Jersey Nets and Golden State Warriors. Blaylock was an All-Star in 1994 while with the Hawks. He averaged 13.5 points, 6.7 assists and 2.3 steals for his career. Blaylock made the NBA's all-defensive teams six times in the 1990s.

The rock band Pearl Jam wrote “Sending good thoughts to Mookie,” wrote on its @pearljamofficial Instagram account. Pearl Jam was originally named “Mookie Blaylock” and their album “Ten” was a tribute to his jersey number.
